Alex Holman – December/January Blog

After a pretty quiet December including the Christmas/New Year period everything is starting to get back into full swing again!
It’s been a lot of wrapping up in far too many layers and braving icy roads or muddy tracks for hacks recently, so we’re all looking forward to it warming up a bit, really!
We just had one outing in December, where Alfie went dressaging to get his first winter competition out of the way. His tests were both significantly better than any of his BE tests we’ve done so far so I was very pleased with him, and we came 2nd & 4th with really positive comments and good marks. My boss, Dickon, also won both tests on his lovely horse Ferdi, so it was a good yard trip out!

Hope was just kept ticking over as I couldn’t get her out competing too much, but in each session she felt better and stronger so all ready for bigger jumps in the new year…
She’s had multiple outings already in 2017, and has really been showing how well she feels with some really impressive jumping. She’s been feeling very confident every time and has been happily clearing a 1.30m-1.35m track, which is no mean feat for a little horse! Having owned and produced her for 5 years this year it’s so rewarding to be enjoying the benefits now after all my hard work.

Hope’s started her competitions well this year too, with back to back wins over a smaller height just to get her some match practice, then we’ve tackled some decent tracks at Hartpury College’s recent BSJA show, including our first 1.15m class, which she made feel pretty straightforward. No placings from the BS sadly; however lots to build on for the future as she is such a competitive horse, but it can’t go right every time!

Happy new year everyone, fingers crossed it’s a good one!
